Helena Espvall / Ernesto Díaz-Infante / Marjorie Sturm
Helena Espvall es multiinstrumentista, compositora e improvisadora sueca afincada en Lisboa, luego de estar residiendo largo tiempo en Estado Unidos. Toca en la banda estadounidense de folk psicodélico, Espers y en el conjunto Amnesiac Music & Dance, así también colabora en varios grupos de folk psicodélico e improvisación libre.
Ernesto Díaz-Infante de ascendencia mexicana es un guitarrista, improvisador y compositor, radicado en San Francisco, quien ha estado activo desde mediados de los ’90.
Marjorie Sturm estudió Psicología en la Universidad de Michigan, quien obtuvo el máster en Cine en la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco. Es una galardonada cineasta en cuyas películas aborda varias disciplinas: narrativa, documental y experimental. En su primer largometraje «The Cult of JT LeRoy», se incluye parte de la música que grabaron Helena Espvall y Ernesto Díaz-Infante. Marjorie y Ernesto dirigen desde 1997 el sello de música experimental Pax Recordings.
Helena Espvall y Ernesto Diaz-Infante ya venían colaborando juntos; en los álbumes «A Hallowed Shell of Ash and Rust» (Erototox Decodings, 2021) y en la compilación «Live from the Devil’s Triangle Volume 12 compilation» (Autoeditado en 2009).
En «A Shadowed Fulguration» -editado por Pax Recordings el 28 de marzo 2025- Helena Espvall toca el violonchelo, guitarra acústica y está encargada de la electrónica. En tanto, Ernesto Díaz-Infante toca la guitarra acústica y Marjorie Sturm la flauta nepalí, campanas ceremoniales y otras percusiones.
«A Shadowed Fulguration» -grabado en Lisboa por Derek Espvall en 2023- comienza con el tema de larga duración (14 minutos) “Between the thing and the apprehension”, donde abre un diálogo entre el arabesco acorde del violonchelo de Espvall y el rasgueo sostenido de la guitarra de Díaz-Infante. Su paisaje sonoro me traslada al Oriente; hacia un estado reflexivo. “There is Appearance, from which they ramify” despliega bellos rasgueos al violonchelo junto a sutiles punteos a la guitarra, mientras como telón de fondo las notas vacilantes de la flauta quedan suspendidas en el aire. “(Self-other-self)” muestra a los(as) tres músicos en total comunión con la creación de una atmósfera apacible.
“Rational animals gather” es una sesión de improvisación de largo aliento que invita a un viaje en el que vamos soltando lo que nos pesa hasta encontrarnos con la liviandad. “Night in our eyes” tiende hacia una conversación abstracta y atonal que continúa su camino en “Receiving”. Cierra este disco “We fall into heaven” con su infalible diálogo de improvisación.
En este nuevo álbum el violonchelo, la guitarra y flauta extienden sus brazos para expresar su gratitud por la vida, por estar presentes con una música arropada de candidez.
Helena Espvall is a Swedish multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser based in Lisbon, after living for a long time in the United States. She plays in the American psychedelic folk band Espers and in the ensemble Amnesiac Music & Dance, as well as collaborating with various psychedelic folk and free improvisation groups.
Ernesto Díaz-Infante, of Mexican descent, is a guitarist, improviser and composer based in San Francisco, who has been active since the mid-1990s.
Marjorie Sturm studied psychology at the University of Michigan and obtained a master’s degree in film from San Francisco State University. She is an award-winning filmmaker whose films span several disciplines: narrative, documentary and experimental. Her first feature film, ‘The Cult of JT LeRoy’, includes some of the music recorded by Helena Espvall and Ernesto Díaz-Infante. Marjorie and Ernesto have been running the experimental music label Pax Recordings since 1997.
Helena Espvall and Ernesto Diaz-Infante had already collaborated on the albums ‘A Hallowed Shell of Ash and Rust’ (Erototox Decodings, 2021) and the compilation ‘Live from the Devil’s Triangle Volume 12 compilation’ (self-released in 2009).
In ‘A Shadowed Fulguration’ -released by Pax Recordings on 28 March 2025- Helena Espvall plays the cello, acoustic guitar and is in charge of the electronics. Meanwhile, Ernesto Diaz-Infante plays the acoustic guitar and Marjorie Sturm plays the Nepalese flute, ceremonial bells and other percussion instruments.
‘A Shadowed Fulguration’ -recorded in Lisbon by Derek Espvall in 2023- begins with the long-form track ‘Between the thing and the apprehension,’ which opens a dialogue between Espvall’s arabesque cello chords and Díaz-Infante’s sustained guitar strumming. Its soundscape transports to the East, to a reflective state. ‘There is Appearance, from which they ramify’ unfolds beautiful cello strumming alongside subtle guitar picking, while in the background the wavering notes of the flute remain suspended in the air. ‘(Self-other-self)’ shows the three musicians in total communion with the creation of a peaceful atmosphere.
‘Rational animals gather’ is a long improvisation session that invites to a journey in which let go of what weighs us down until we find lightness. ‘Night in our eyes’ tends towards an abstract and atonal conversation that continues its path in “Receiving”. The album closes with ‘We fall into heaven’ and its infallible improvisational dialogue.
In this new album, the cello, guitar and flute extend their arms to express their gratitude for life, for being present with music wrapped in candour.
