Ethan Rose is a Portland, Oregon based sound artist special sound sources such as a music box and a placer piano for the creation of soundworks [2004’s Miniatures & Sea and 2005’s The Dot and the Line both released by Locust Music].
In 2005 saw the release of Ceiling Songs on vinyl and this year Locust reissued it on CD.
His music is a blend of organic and synthetic sounds taken from various sources like musical boxes, string instruments, digital errors among others.

¿Nos podrías explicar tu trabajo de tus dos objetos sonoros para Locust estos son, «Miniatures & Sea» [2004] y «The Dot and the Line» [2005]?
«Estas dos ediciones marcaron el comienzo de mi exploración en música automatizada. En ‘Miniatures & Sea’ [2004] y para ‘The Dot and the Line’ [2005] utilicé un piano de juguete. Comencé tomando cada instrumento y desmenuzando una canción ya existente, por lo que todo lo que restaba fueron unas pocas notas. Luego cogí estos sonidos y los re-arreglé en las computadoras para crear largos trabajos sonoros. Ambas piezas están basadas en una idea compositiva similar, en cuanto a utilizar algo antiguo para hacer algo nuevo».
¿Acaso fueron estos objetos la fuente del material que ocupaste para producir «Ceiling Songs»?
«En ‘Ceiling Songs’ utilicé pianos de juguete, cajas musicales y una variedad de otros instrumentos. El álbum tuvo como inspiración estos dos objetos sonoros, ya que encontré que me divertí mucho trabajando con estos sonidos automatizados, pero también quería expandir la paleta, entonces incorporé instrumentos más convencionales».
Este álbum está rodeado de melodías. ¿Por qué estabas interesado en melodies algo infantiles en «Ceiling Songs»?
«Me gustan los sonidos nuevos e interesantes, pero creo que dicha melodía todavía es necesaria en mi propia música. No puedo explicar más que esto, excepto que diré que estas melodías salieron de mí».
¿Tienes proyectos paralelos?
«También toco en una banda que se llama Small Sails. Hemos estado combinando música y filmes hasta hace unos pocos años y actualmente hemos estado en una gira por Norte América».

Could you please explain us your work of the two small run Multiples for Locust 2004’s Miniatures & Sea and 2005’s The Dot and the Line?
«These two releases marked the beginning of my exploration in automated music. For Miniature and Sea I used a music box for source sounds, and for The Dot and the Line I used a placer piano. I started by taking each instrument and stripping down a pre-existing song so that all that was left was a few bits of notes. Then I took these sounds and rearranged them with computers to create larger soundworks. Both of these pieces are based on a similar compositional idea of using something old to make something new.»
Do these two objects were the source material for the making of Ceilings Songs?
«On Ceiling Songs I used player pianos, music boxes, and a variety of other instruments. The album was inspired by these two small run multiples, because I had found that I had enjoyed working with these automated sounds, but I also wanted to expand the pallet, so I incorporated instruments of a more traditional sort.»
This album is all surrounded by melodies. Why are you interested in the child like melodies on Ceilings Songs?
«I like new and interesting sounds, but I feel that melody is still necessary to me in my own music. I can’t explain it beyond that, except to say that these are the melodies that come out of me.»
Do you have any side-projects?
«I also play in a band called Small Sails. We have been combining music and film for the past few years, and are currently on a North American tour.»
