Flower – Corsano Duo
Michael Flower y Chris Corsano se formaron en junio de 2005 en Leeds, Inglaterra para ofrecer una de las propuestas más interesantes del underground.
Por aquel entonces Corsano —quien retornó a Estados Unidos— se había ido a vivir a Manchester por algunos meses.
En 2004, tocaron juntos cuando Corsano y Paul Flaherty colaboraban en el grupo psicodélico y de improvisación Vibracathedral Orchestra. Flower desde entonces es miembro de dicha banda y de Sunroof! Corsano tocó como invitado en 2005 y colabora en bandas como Sunburned Hand of the Man, junto a Paul Flaherty y como baterista de Björk, entre otros.
Con Michael Flower en banjo japonés, tampura y órgano, y Chris Corsano en batería, melódica y cello, producen un potente rock sicodélico embadurnado con extensos mantras que evocan cítaras hindú.
El dúo graba su LP debut “The Radiant Mirror” (Textile Records, 2007), el que recibe muy buena crítica, y este año VHF Records edita su segundo álbum “The Four Aims”.
Chris Corsano gentilmente respondió esta entrevista en la que también anticipa los próximos pasos de este dúo.

Flower toca a veces el shahi baaja bastante rápido así como tú la batería. Siento que hay muchos momentos de in crescendo que alcanzan una alta inspiración o un tipo de trance. ¿Qué piensas de esto?
“Podría ser cualquier cosa. Algunos pensamientos aleatorios flotarán de un lado a otro. Supongo que la cosa más importante que pienso es tratar de sacar adelante lo que está haciendo Mick y/o intentar de empujar las cosas lejos”.
Creo que “The Four Aims” explora la quietud, en tanto “The Radiant Mirror” mostró la fuerza y el lado furioso de F&C duo.
“Sí, un sonido diferente para un disco diferente. Esto no significa que vuelva la espalda al estilo fuerte –sería bueno seguir tocando sets desde ahora a la eternidad si sintiera que la situación nos llamara a eso–. Pero quizás sería bueno sacar una cosa diferente para ampliar la mirada. Muchos de los momentos tranquilos en ‘The Four Aims’ fueron realizados en la pieza de estar de Mick y yo no los haría si no tuvieran que ver con la atmósfera. Quizás no, porque muchos de los temas pesados también fueron grabados allí. Aunque me gusta saber que sentiste que había una diferencia entre los dos discos”.
¿Nos podrías contar acerca de cuándo y cómo se formó F&C duo y qué tan a menudo hacen conciertos e improvisan juntos?
“En 2005 Mick me pidió que tocara con él para un concierto en Leeds. Me había mudado antes desde Estados Unidos a Manchester, Inglaterra por unos pocos meses y realmente me hacía falta tocar con alguien en forma regular (lo que estaba haciendo con bastante frecuencia en USA con gente como Paul Flaherty y Hill Nace). Ya conocía a Mick de haber compartido varias fechas con Vibracathedral Orchestra y quedándome en su casa cuando estaba de gira con Sunburned (Hand of the Man) en 2003. En cualquier caso, sintonizamos muy bien desde el primer show y desde entonces estamos trabajando juntos. Volví a los EE.UU. en enero pasado por lo que se hace más difícil reunirse, pero tenemos planificada algunas giras este verano (boreal)”.
¿Qué es lo que viene para F&C duo? (¿tienen planes de venir a Sudamérica?)
“Dos semanas en julio, dos en agosto. Irlanda, Reino Unido, los países escandinavos y algunos conciertos en el continente. Esto es lo que se viene. No hay planes para ir a Sudamérica, pero lo hemos conversado. ¿Quizás en 2010 si tenemos suerte?”

Flower sometimes plays the shahi baaja quite fast and you with the drums as well. I feel there are a lot of in crescendo moments that reach a very high inspiration or kind of trance. What do you think about?
«Could be anything. Some random thoughts will float in and out. I guess the main thing I’m thinking about is trying to keep up with what Mick’s doing and/or trying to push things further.»
I think “The Four Aims” explores quietness while “The Radiant Mirror” showed up the strong and the fierce side of F&C duo.
«Yeah, different sound for a different record. Not that I wanna turn my back on the loud style—I’d be alright with playing paint-peeler sets from here to eternity if it felt like that’s what the situation always called for. But it’s maybe nice to put out some different stuff to widen the scope. A lot of the quieter things on The Four Aims were done in Mick’s living room. I dunno if that had anything to do with it. Maybe not, ’cause a few of the blasters were also recorded there, too. I’m happy that you feel there’s a difference between the two records, though.»
Tell us about how F&C duo was formed and how often do you play concerts and jam together?
«In 2005, Mick asked me to join him for a show he was asked to play in Leeds. I had moved from the U.S. to Manchester, England a few months prior and was sorely missing playing regularly with somebody (which I was doing a lot back in the states with people like Paul Flaherty and Bill Nace). I already knew Mick from sharing a few bills with Vibracathedral and staying at his house when I was touring with Sunburned back in ’03. Anyway, things clicked from the first gig, and we’ve just been truckin’ along since. I moved back to the U.S. in January, so it’s a little harder to get together, but we have some tours planned for the summer.»
What’s coming next for the F&C duo? (any plans for coming to South America?)
«Two weeks in July, 2 in August. Ireland, UK, Scandinavia and some shows on the continent. It’s still coming together. No plans for going to South America, but we’ve talked about it. Maybe in 2010, if we’re lucky?»
