My Cat Is An Alien & TALWEG / My Cat Is An Alien & Joëlle Vinciarelli
El dúo musical italiano, compuesto por los hermanos Maurizio y Roberto Opalio más conocidos como My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), se formó en Turín, Italia, a finales de 1997. Desde entonces han realizado un prolífico trabajo musical en el que la improvisación y la experimentación, como también las artes audiovisuales y el diseño, se han convertido en el sello distintivo de MCIAA. Con alrededor de 120 discos publicados, los ha llevado a colaborar con los más prominentes artistas de la escena experimental: Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore, Glands Of External Secretion, Christina Carter, Favio Orsi, Steve Roden, Loren Connors, Mats Gustafsson, por nombrar algunos.
En este disco Maurizio Opalio está a cargo de la campanilla de mano de tres tonos, monedas de metal, vibráfono, árbol de campanas, pequeños instrumentos de cuerda étnicos y tambor de acero. En tanto, Roberto Opalio hace las vocalizaciones y toca el órgano de válvulas Philicord de los años ’60, las campanillas de viento, el antiguo tono -instrumento de cuerda drone- y un antiguo mecanismo de reloj de péndulo.
Este nuevo lanzamiento consta de un doble LP de una sola cara, donde ambos LPs tienen sólo la cara A con música, además de la misma portada.
El LP 1 denominado “The Secret of the Space Bubble” contó con la participación de los hermanos Opalio junto a Talweg, un dúo de metal libre de Francia formado por Joëlle Vinciarelli y Eric Lombaert en la percusión, además de Eric Lombaert en la batería, cencerros, percusión de bambú, tambor de acero y Joëlle Vinciarelli en vocalizaciones, fliscorno, zanfoña de juguete, silbatos étnicos y flauta antigua.
«The Secret of the Space Bubble» (LP1), co-editado por los sellos Opax / Up Against The Wall, Motherfuckers! (el sello de Talweg) el 2 de mayo último, surgió de una idea de Roberto Opalio quien imaginó a los cuatro músicos tocando como astronautas en gravedad cero; una suerte de burbuja, de ahí el título de este disco que está basado en una mezcla poco ortodoxa de efectos de retardo y reverberación.
«The Secret of the Space Bubble» es una sola pieza de 21 minutos en el que los ecos de las voces y retardos del fliscornio, la percusión, campanillas y demás instrumentos flotan en el aire, suspendidos en un recorrido infinito donde el tiempo no tiene límites, invitando a imaginar paisajes sonoros de otro mundo.
El LP 2 de My Cat Is An Alien junto a Joëlle Vinciarelli, bajo el título «Eternal Beyond IV” tiene una duración de alrededor de 17 minutos, en el que Maurizio Opalio es responsable de la caja de resonancia de piano vertical antiguo, efectos de pedal y campana; Roberto Opalio se encuentra en vocalizaciones, efectos de pedal y alientronics y Joëlle Vinciarelli en vocalizaciones, efectos de pedal y trompeta.
En este LP 2 el ruido de frecuencias radiales se funde con la voz espectral de Roberto Opalio que se eleva por todo lo alto, como si estuviera en el cielo, sin la intención de tocar tierra, mientras el enjambre de notas sintetizadas crean una atmósfera enrarecida y fantasmagórica.
MCIAA muestran un trabajo cada vez más exploratorio cuyos matices sonoros son indescriptibles, sorprendentes y se sienten tan conmovedores como inspiradores.
The Italian musical duo, comprised of brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio better known as My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), formed in Turin, Italy, late in 1997. On this album Maurizio Opalio is in charge of three tone chime hand bell, metal coins, vibratone, bell tree, small ethnic string instruments, steel drum. Whereas, Roberto Opalio is on word less vocals, 1960s Philicord valve organ, old pendulum clock mechanism, wind chimes, ancientone -stringed drone instrument.
This new release consists of a single-sided double LP, where both LPs have only the A-side with music and they have the same cover art.
LP 1 called ‘The Secret of the Space Bubble‘ featured the Opalio brothers with Talweg, a free metal duo from France consisting of Joëlle Vinciarelli and Eric Lombaert on percussion, plus Eric Lombaert on drums, cowbells, bamboo and steel percussion and Joëlle Vinciarelli on wordless vocals, flugelhorn, hurgy toy, ethnic whistles, ancient flute.
‘The Secret of the Space Bubble’ (LP1), co-released by MCIAA’s Opax and Up Against The Wall, Motherfuckers! (Talweg’s own label) on 2 May 2025, is the result of an idea by Roberto Opalio, who imagined the four musicians playing like astronauts in zero gravity; a sort of bubble, hence the title of this album, which is based on an unorthodox mix of delay and reverb effects.
‘The Secret of the Space Bubble‘ is a single 21-minute piece in which the echoes of the voices and delays of the flugelhorn, percussion, bells and other instruments float in the air, hovering in an infinite journey where time has no limits, inviting the listener to imagine otherworldly soundscapes.
LP 2 by My Cat Is An Alien along side Joëlle Vinciarelli, under the title ‘Eternal Beyond IV‘ is a single 17-minute piece, where Maurizio Opalio plays antique upright piano soundboard, pedal effects, bell; Roberto Opalio in wordless vocals, pedal effects, alientronics, and Joëlle Vinciarelli, wordless vocals, pedal effects and trumpet.
In LP 2 the noise of radio frequencies merges with Roberto Opalio’s spectral vocals that rises up high, as if he were in the sky, without the intention of touching the ground, as the swarm of synthesized notes create a rarefied, ghostly atmosphere.
MCIAA show an increasingly exploratory work whose sonic nuances are indescribable, surprising and feel as poignant as they are inspiring.
