Reverbaphon
Paul Smith aka Reverbaphon es escocés con un background de más de diez años tocando en bandas de improvisación tanto en su ciudad natal de Dundee como en Bristol. Su interés estaba también en la utilización de instrumentos acústicos como la guitarra, acordeón, banjo y percusión, a lo que agregaba sus equipos electrónicos. En Glasgow es donde Reverbaphon toma forma y además de Smith lo compone su compañera Eva Cadario, quien toca Haiku, las campanillas y agrega sampleos y registros de campo.
Después de su EP debut “The Medium Thru Which Sound Travels Is No Longer Present» [2003] en Benbecula Records, el sello de Glasgow edita su primer larga duración “Our Heart Beats With Joy (The Curved World Outside)» [2004], el que ofrece insospechadas variantes en donde se une la experimentación con los registros de campo, la música folk con alegres notas de acordeón y guitarra, atisbos al jazz y arreglos electrónicos. Pero por sobre todo, la música de Reverbaphon está delicadamente hecha, cada tema con su propia personalidad, melodías y texturas propias.

Reverbaphon aka Paul Smith hail from Dundee, Scotland has a background of more than ten years playing in improv bands in his native city and Bristol. He was also interested in acoustic instruments like the guitar, accordion, banjo and percussion, to which he added his electronic set-up. In Glasgow it is where Reverbaphon takes form alongside his partner Eva Cadario who plays Haiku and doll bells and adds field recordings and samples.
After his debut EP ‘The Medium Thru Which Sound Travels Is No Longer Present’ [2003] on Benbecula Records, the Glasgow’s label released his first full-length album ‘Our Heart Beats With Joy (The Curved World Outside)’ [2004], that offers unpredictable variants like experimental music with field recordings, folk music with accordion and guitar tones, spyings to jazz and electronic arrangements. But above all, the music of Reverbaphon is delicately done, each track with its own personality, melodies and textures.

**El álbum «Our Heart Beats With Joy» muestra una importante variedad de estilos, pero el corazón de tu música evoca paisajes sonoros especialmente marcados por el último tema «The curved world outside». ¿Cuál es tu opinión al respecto?**
«Mmm… eso es interesante… el tema que tú mencionas significa para mí un completo quiebre con la tiranía de la música de máquinas.»
**En este tema también la música folk tiene un rol importante. ¿Cuál es tu conexión con la música folk?**
«Viniendo de Escocia supongo que la música folk fue parte de mi educación aunque siento que no tengo una real conexión con esta música, a no ser que sea que siempre intento aproximarme a nuevas composiciones con una historia ‘imaginaria’ implícita.»
**¿Eres el único miembro en Reverbaphon?**
«Mi compañera Eva es parte de Reverbaphon. Haikus y el control de calidad.»
**¿Has trabajado junto a Robin Guthrie [ex-Cocteau Twins]?**
«No.»
**¿Tienes algunos proyectos en paralelo?**
«Por el momento no. En el pasado he tocado en bandas y he colaborado con otros músicos que están usualmente en bandas de improvisación.»

**On ‘Our Heart Beats With Joy’ shows a wide range of styles, but the core of your music evokes soundscapes specially marked by the last track ‘The curved world outside’. What’s your opinion about?**
«Mmm… that’s interesting … the track you mention signifies for me a complete break from the tyranny of machine music.»
**In this last track also folk music has a main role. What’s your connection with folk music?**
«Coming from Scotland I suppose folk music was part of my upbringing though I feel I have no real connection with folk music other than I try to always approach new compositions with an implied ‘imaginary’ history.»
**Are you the only member involved in Reverbaphon?**
«My partner Eva is part of Reverbaphon. Haikus and quality control.»
**Have you worked together with Robin Guthrie?**
«No.»
**Do you have any side-projects?**
«At the moment, no. In the past I have played in bands and collaborated with others usually based around spontaneous improvisation.»
