The Eternals

Esta es una banda de Chicago que se formó en 1991 por Damon Locks, líder y cantante con su falsete de voz grave e irónica más el órgano y moog de su tecladista Wayne Montana. Todos sus integrantes tienen un importante bagaje, colaborando con Joan Of Arc, Tortoise, Vandermark 5 y Peter Brontzman, entre otros.
The Eternals es una banda ecléctica que combina variados estilos como el space-rock, punk, hip-hop y electrónica, todo ello con un aire exótico e histriónico. El trío tiene un 12 pulgadas en el sello Aesthetics, dos 12” en Thrill Jockey, dos álbumes en Desoto y el que es motivo de esta entrevista “Rawar Style” [Aesthetics, 2004] y próximamente se editará un EP en el sello Antifaz de Puerto Rico.
En 2001 el grupo se presentó en el marco del festival All Tomorrow Parties que se lleva a cabo en Inglaterra y ha realizado giras con Tortoise, Isotope 217 y ha tocado junto a la banda de Washington Fugazi, Hood y el colectivo Pulseprogramming, entre otros grupos. This trio based in Chicago is made up of Damon Locks, leader and singer with his dark and at the same time ironic falsetto voice plus the organ and moog played by keyboard man Wayne Montana. All their members have an important background, collaborating with Joan Of Arc, Tortoise, Vandermark 5 and Peter Brontzman, among others.
The Eternals is an eclectic band that combines varied styles like space-rock, punk, hip-hop and electronics, all it with an exotic and histrionic ambience. The trio has a 12 inches on the Aesthetics label, two 12″ on Thrill Jockey, one album in Desoto and a recent one ‘Rawar Style’ [Aesthetics, 2004] that is reason for this interview and soon will be release an EP on Antifaz from Puerto Rico.
In 2001 the group performed at All Tomorrow Parties festival in England and has toured along with Tortoise, Isotope 217 and has played with the Washington band Fugazi, Hood and the Pulseprogramming collective, among other groups.

**La canción “Silhouette” al parecer hace referencia a la guerra de Irak, incluso tiene un aire del oriente y puedo escuchar un estribillo que dice: “Sadam, Sadam, Sadam…” ¿De qué trata?**
“Este es un error de concepto común lo que no es sorprendente, dado el clima de hoy en día. En realidad digo ‘Sudden, sudden, sudden’ Es algo que tiene que ver con una canción de amor. El sample es de origen africano. Tengo muchas canciones en el álbum que tienen una motivación política pero esta no es una de ellas. ‘Silhouette’ es una canción inspirada por el corazón”.

**¿El sample del vendedor de helados de brasileño que anuncia una combinación deliciosa de helados tiene alguna relación con la canción “Bewareness” en particular o fue utilizado por casualidad?**
«Fue una decisión de texto. Nos gusta traer cosas de alrededor nuestro y ponerlas en las canciones. Piezas de nuestra vida. Nuestro viaje a Brasil fue muy influyente para nosotros y deseábamos poner un pieza de éste en nuestra música”.

**Las letras de ”Gussy up yourself” son bastante críticas respecto de la violencia y la apatía que hay con este tipo de problemas sociales. ¿Son estos temas los que te interesan interpretar en tu música?**
«Sí, definitivamente. Pienso que es muy importante comunicar ideas en la música que hago”.

**Cada miembro de la banda ha colaborado en diversos grupos y ha participado en varios proyectos. ¿Todos ustedes tienen distintos backgrounds que hace que la música de The Eternals sea tan ecléctica?**
“Nuestros backgrounds son diferentes pero tienen mucha base en común. Todos tenemos cosas que nos entusiasman musicalmente. Nosotros como banda damos la bienvenida a este entusiasmo e intentamos de incorporar estas inspiraciones en las canciones”.

**Qué es lo próximo que viene para The Eternals?**
“Ir de gira y escribir muchas canciones. Esperamos tocar en todos lados”.

**The ‘Silhouette’ song it seems it has a reference to Iraq’s War, even it has an Eastern flavour and I can hear something like a burden that says ‘Sadam, Sadam, Sadam…’ What’s all about?**
“That is a common misconception, given the climate of the day it is not surprising. I actually say «Sudden, sudden, sudden» It is something of a love song. The sample is African in origin. I do have many songs on the album that are politically motivated but this is not one of them. Silhouette is a song inspired by the heart.”

**The Brazilian ice cream salesman’s sample that announces some delicious ice cream combination has any relation with the song ‘Bewareness’ in particular, or it was chosen by chance?**
“It was a textual decision. We like to bring things in from around us and put them into our songs. Pieces of our life. Our trip to Brazil was very influential to us and we wanted to put a piece of it into our music.”

**’Gussy up yourself’ lyrics are quite critic in regarding violence and the kind of apathy for this kind of social problems. Are these issues the ones you are interested in to expose through your music?**
“Yes, definitely. I think it’s very important to communicate ideas in the music I make.”

**Each member of the band has collaborated on different bands and participate in various projects. Do you all have different backgrounds as The Eternals’ music is very eclectic?**
“Our backgrounds are different but share a lot of common ground. We all have things that excite us musically. We as a band welcome this excitement and try to incorporate these inspirations into the songs.”

**What’s coming next for The Eternals?**
“Touring and more song writing. We are hoping to play all over the place.”
