Valance Drakes
El artista de música electrónica Valance Drakes, quien reside en Sofía, Bulgaria, tiene editados varios discos en sellos como Detroit Underground, Amek y M-Tronic. «Freedom Is Its Own Kind Of Salary» es su cuarto álbum y el primero para laaps, sello paralelo a la etiqueta francesa Eilean Rec., que realiza ediciones limitadas en vinilo y que es conducida por Mathias Van Eecloo.
Drakes trabaja con registros de campo y sampleos de distintas fuentes que procesa en su computadora, creando atmósferas inquietantes, con palpitaciones dub y ambient.

Electronic music artist Valance Drakes, based in Sofia, Bulgaria, has released several albums on labels such as Detroit Underground, Amek, M-Tronic. «Freedom Is Its Own Kind Of Salary» is his fourth album and the first for laaps, a sublabel of French Eilean Rec., which releases limited run vinyl and is hosted by Mathias Van Eecloo.
Drakes works with field recordings and samples from different sources that he processes on his computer, creating haunting atmospheres, with driving dub rhythm and ambient atmospheres.

**¿Qué significa para ti el título del álbum, «La libertad es su propio tipo de salario»?**
«Trabajando duro para vivir de las cosas que amas y te interesan, seguiré haciéndolo tanto si las cabezas las escuchan como si no. Estoy aquí para crear el arte con el que quiero rodearme y no para complacer a una audiencia más amplia.
Mucha gente en el mundo de la música vive iluminada por el sol de lo que creen que es la realidad. Pero hay algo que la mayoría no ve, un inframundo. Un lugar que es tan real pero no tan brillante, y yo soy de allí.»
**¿Cuáles fueron tus fuentes de inspiración para la realización del álbum?**
«Mi padre. Han pasado 8 años desde que dejó esta tierra. Encontré muchas grabaciones de él y las usé en cada pista del LP.»
**¿Combinas tu música con otras formas de arte?**
«Arte de BMX y técnica mixta.»
**¿Puede hablarnos brevemente sobre la escena de la música electrónica en Bulgaria?**
«Que están sobreviviendo y haciendo ruido. En el mundo occidental su escena puede parecer pequeña, pero las cosas grandes y pequeñas no se rigen por las mismas leyes, nada grande se puede alterar, pero las pequeñas sí.
Me siento honrado de ser parte de ella. Ivan Shopov me presentó y me llevó a Sofía para trabajar en proyectos. Amek se hizo cargo y ha sido parte de la tripulación desde entonces.»
**¿Cuáles fueron los criterios para elegir las grabaciones de campo?**
«Auriculares binaurales para iPhone.»

**What does it mean for you the title of the album, «Freedom Is Its Own Kind Of Salary»?**
«Working hard to live off the things that you love and are interested in, and I shall continue to do so whether heads listen to it or not. I’m here to create the art that I want to surround myself with and not to please a larger audience.
A lot of people in the music world live in the sun-lit world of what they believe to be reality. But there’s an unseen by most, an underworld. A place that is just as real but not as brightly, and I’m from there.»
**What were your sources of inspiration for the making of the album?**
«My father. It’s been 8 years since he left this earth. I found a lot of recordings of him and used them for every single track on the LP.»
**Do you combine your music with other art forms?**
«BMX & Mixed media art.»
**Can you briefly tell us about the electronic music scene in Bulgaria?**
«They’re surviving and making noise. In the Western world their scene may seem small but big and small things don’t abide by the same laws. Nothing big can be altered, but small things can.
I’m honoured to be a part of it. Ivan Shopov introduced me and brought me over to Sofia to work on projects. Amek took over and has been a part of the crew ever since.»
**What was the criteria for choosing the field recordings?**
«Binaural earphones for the iPhone.»
