UnicaZürn
Es un frio día en Londres, es enero de 2025. El sitio escogido por Steve Thrower es Maison Bertaux, Soho, a las 13 horas y donde se respira una atmósfera bastante bric a brac, de tacita, de porcelana antigua.
Ya en mi segunda taza de té, me pregunto por mi encuentro con el dúo minimalista UnicaZürn, que gentilmente accedió a compartir conmigo unos momentos de conversación y firma de discos.
A partir de colaboraciones, el proyecto surge en 2009, contando con seis álbumes, cuatro mini álbumes y un 7’ pulgadas. Sus discos son de ediciones limitadas muy pequeñas que se agotan a los pocos minutos de ponerse en venta.
Provenientes de proyectos cercanos a leyendas como Danielle Dax o Karl Blake, sus integrantes comienzan sus trabajos de experimentación sonora a fines de los ‘70 y principios de los ‘80 y han deambulado por bandas como The Fast Set, Shock Headed Peters, Possesion, Five Or Six, Coil, The Amal Gamal Ensemble, Cyclobe y Arkkon.
UnicaZürn es una banda minimalista, cuyo sonido se emparenta con exponentes de la sagrada repetición como La Monte Young, Popol Vuh o Terry Riley, estructuras Avant garde y jazz, que se ven decoradas con una carga psíquica de pincelada dark ambient, espacial y abstracto. Todo ello construye un universo, que, en compañía de los vientos ejecutados por Steve, se complementan con las atmósferas creadas por Dave (Knight) y que no cesan en mostrarse a sí mismas como dualistas y ambiguas.
De pronto veo pasar a Steve Thrower por la calle y salgo a su encuentro; no damos un abrazo fraterno y nos sentamos a charlar; increíble -pienso- estoy sentado con uno de los artífices de “Love Secret Domain” (1991) y “Hellraiser” (1987) de Coil, también un experto en cine (recomiendo sus libros sobre Jess Franco y Lucio Fulci) y que también ha actuado en películas del desaparecido Derek Jarman. Con un exquisito acento del norte inglés, Steve comienza a contarme algo de su vida hasta que, por fuera, se visualiza a David Knight; nos ve y se integra a la conversación. Pedimos café y pastelillos, entregándonos a una charla que parece de amigos de toda la vida. Knight, de imponente acento londinense y de prominente presencia en la escena experimental inglesa, comienza a charlar con encantador y típico humor inglés. Conversamos sobre nuestras primeras bandas favoritas, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Popol Vuh, Kraftwerk o Michael Jackson; anécdotas sobre Henry Cow o The Fall o Austin Osman Spare marcan la pauta de una apasionante charla.
Para esta ocasión hemos elegido la última transmisión del dúo inglés, titulada “Modulisme Session 091”, con dos pistas de 58 minutos, realizada el 8 de septiembre de 2023. Dicha transmisión fue realizada para la plataforma Modulisme de Francia, un medio que documenta y da soporte a los proyectos modulares de experimentación y vanguardistas en general y que posee 18 antenas de transmisión en vivo. Viajando por universos alternativos, la música de UnicaZürn posee algo orgánico, alienígeno, primigenio, que deriva a la naturaleza de Fiztcarraldo; es el tránsito entre “Ouverture” a “Part 2”. Disponible sólo para descarga, este trabajo muestra la madurez del dúo, plasmando los universos yuxtapuestos que ambos llevan consigo. Quedamos en vernos prontamente en un clima más amable o para una posible presentación.
Después de un cálido abrazo y muchas risas, veo alejarse a Dave y Steve por las calles de Soho y pienso en todas estas cosas. En los universos que ellos son capaces de cruzar y en la sencillez y generosidad que como personas me han mostrado. Dicho esto, los invito a conocer a este interesante proyecto de dos leyendas que aparecen y desaparecen como la antigua niebla en las enigmáticas calles de Londres.

Already on my second cup of tea, I wonder about my encounter with the minimalist duo UnicaZürn, who kindly agreed to share a few moments of conversation and records autographs for me.
The project was born from collaborations in 2009, with six albums, four mini albums and a 7′ inch, their albums are very small limited editions that sell out within minutes of being put on sale. Coming from projects close to legends such as Danielle Dax or Karl Blake, its members began their work of sound experimentation in the late 70s and early 80s and have wandered through bands such as The Fast Set, Shock Headed Peters, Possesion, Five Or Six, Coil, The Amal Gamal Ensemble, Cyclobe and Arkkon.
UnicaZürn is a minimalist band, whose sound is related to exponents of sacred repetition such as La Monte Young, Popol Vuh or Terry Riley, Avant garde and jazz structures, which are decorated with a psychic charge of dark ambient, spatial and abstract brushstrokes. All this builds a universe, which, in the company of the winds played by Steve, is complemented by the atmospheres created by Dave (Knight) and which do not cease to show themselves as dualistic and ambiguous.
Suddenly I see Steve Thrower passing by on the street and I go out to meet him; We give each other a fraternal hug and sit down to chat; incredible – I think – I’m sitting with one of the creators of Coil’s “Love Secret Domain” (1991) and ‘Hellraiser,’ (1987) also a film expert (I recommend his books on Jess Franco and Lucio Fulci), and who has also acted in films by the late Derek Jarman. With an exquisite northern English accent, Steve begins to tell me something about his life until, outside, David Knight appears; he sees us and joins in the conversation. We order coffee and pastries, indulging in a chat that seems like lifelong friends. Knight, with an imposing London accent and a prominent presence in the English experimental scene, begins to chat with charming and typical English humor. We talk about our first favorite bands, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Popol Vuh, Kraftwerk or Michael Jackson; anecdotes about Henry Cow or The Fall or Austin Osman Spare set the tone for an exciting chat. For this occasion we have chosen the last broadcast of the English duo, titled “Modulisme Session 091”, with two tracks of 58 minutes, made on September 8, 2023. This broadcast was made for the Modulisme platform of France, a medium that documents and supports modular experimental and avant-garde projects in general, and which has 18 live broadcast antennas. Traveling through alternative universes, UnicaZürn’s music has something organic, alien, primal, which derives from the nature of Fitcarraldo; it is the transition between ‘Ouverture’ and ‘Part 2.’ Available only for download, this work shows the maturity of the duo, capturing the juxtaposed universes that both carry with them. We agreed to meet soon in a more pleasant climate or for a possible presentation.
After a warm hug and a lot of laughter, I watch Dave and Steve walk away through the streets of Soho and think about all these things. In the universes they are able to cross, and in the simplicity and generosity that they have shown me as people. That said, I invite you to learn about this interesting project of two legends who appear and disappear like the ancient fog in the enigmatic streets of London.
