Alan Courtis es un prolífico músico experimental argentino nacido en Buenos Aires. Cofundó en 1993 la singular banda Reynols y a su haber tiene una extensa discografía que consta de alrededor de 200 discos que incluye trabajos en solitario; usando su propio nombre o bajo seudónimos como Anla Courtis, A Courtis, Prof A. Courtis, etc. y como integrante en grupos: Acid Mothers Reynols, Origami Republika, ÜL, entre otros, o en colaboración con connotados músicos como Lasse Marhaug, Karkowski, Pablo Reche, Aaron Moore, Mattin, Daniel Menche, Tetuzi Akiyama, Makoto Kawabata y David Grubbs, por nombrar algunos.
Alan Courtis – quien se encuentra en el pináculo del underground mundial – es un empecinado experimentador para obtener las mayores posibilidades sonoras con la guitarra (alguna vez lo vi tocando una guitarra sin cuerdas…), manipula cintas y realiza grabaciones de campo, desplegando con ello estilos como el noise, el drone y sonidos e instrumentos del folclore sudamericano.
Courtis es un activo músico que cada año toca con lo más granado de artistas y grupos de alrededor del mundo, como es el caso del nuevo álbum “1972” que realiza junto al vocalista y guitarrista finlandés Jussi Lehtisalo, quien está detrás de las bandas, Circle, Pharaoh Overlord, Rättö ja Lehtisalo y Ektroverde que deambulan en el krautrock, el metal, el ambient, entre otros géneros. Lehtisalo también gestiona su sello Ektro Records, cuya subsidiaria Full Contact Records -que publica sólo vinilos-, sacó “1972”.
“1972”, cuyo título hace referencia al año de nacimiento de Courtis y Lehtisalo, fue editado por Ektro Records/Full Contact Records el 4 de marzo de 2025. e incluye ocho piezas de rock experimental que arranca con “Cebopula”, mostrando lánguidos acordes de guitarra con tintes psicodélicos, mientras la otra guitarra teje entrecortados riffs, al tiempo que se develan ruidos de pedales que navegan en el trasfondo. “Limtruuna” muestra un aletargado recorrido, junto a voces manipuladas. En tanto “Naroranssiranja” se interna por oscuros pasajes en los que objetos metálicos procesados flotan en el ambiente. “Omenzana” revela una vibrante ejecución de guitarras resonantes con efectos retardados que producen ráfagas y latigazos con descargas eléctricas. En “Papuuro” se respira una atmósfera sombría de notas sostenidas y el chasquido de objetos livianos y ruidos electrónicos retorcidos. “Retiisabano” resuena en un espacio profundo e inquietante y el ruido de objetos que chocan entre sí, acompañado de un canto espectral; donde asoma una voz asfixiante que se desvanece en el sopor. “Sokerucar” que cierra este álbum, lo hace con pequeños ruidos que son amplificados como la aguja que se desliza sobre un vinilo estropeado, produciendo una textura escabrosa.
Anla Courtis y Lehtisalo con “1972” realizan un álbum electrizante, al tiempo que apabullante, una oda a la guitarra eléctrica y sus infinitos efectos; el trabajo de detalle con las voces y el uso del espacio como un lugar lleno de matices sonoros.

He co-founded the unique band Reynols in 1993 and to his credit he has an extensive discography consisting of around 200 albums including solo works; using his own name or under monikers such as Anla Courtis, A Courtis, Prof A. Courtis, etc. and as a member of groups like Acid Mothers Reynols, Origami Republika, ÜL, among others, or in collaboration with renowned musicians such as Lasse Marhaug, Karkowski, Pablo Reche, Aaron Moore, Mattin, Daniel Menche, Tetuzi Akiyama, Makoto Kawabata and David Grubbs, to name but a few.
Alan Courtis – who is at the pinnacle of the world’s underground – is a stubborn experimenter to obtain the greatest sonic possibilities with the guitar (I once saw him playing a guitar without strings…), he manipulates tapes and makes field recordings, deploying styles such as noise, drone and South American folk sounds and instruments.
Courtis is an active musician who every year plays with the best of artists and groups from around the world, as is the case with the new album ‘1972’ that he is making together with Finnish vocalist and guitarist Jussi Lehtisalo, who is behind the bands, Circle, Pharaoh Overlord, Rättö ja Lehtisalo and Ektroverde that roam in krautrock, metal, ambient, among other genres. Lehtisalo also runs his label Ektro Records, whose subsidiary Full Contact Records – which releases only vinyl – released ‘1972’.
‘1972’, whose title refers to Courtis and Lehtisalo’s year of birth, was released by Ektro Records/Full Contact Records on 4 March 2025, and includes eight pieces of experimental rock that kicks off with ‘Cebopula’, featuring languid guitar chords with psychedelic overtones, whereas the other guitar weaves choppy riffs, while pedal noises sail in the background. ‘Limtruuna’ shows a lethargic journey, along with manipulated vocals. Meanwhile, ‘Naroranssiranja’ goes into dark passages in which processed metallic objects hover in the atmosphere. ‘Omenzana’ reveals a vibrant execution of resonant guitars with delayed effects that produce bursts and lashes of electric shocks. On ‘Papuuro’ there is a sombre atmosphere of sustained notes and the clicking of light objects and twisted electronic noises. ‘Retiisabano’ resounds in a deep and disturbing space and the noise of clashing objects, accompanied by a spectral chant; where a suffocating voice fades into stupor. ‘Sokerucar’, which closes this album, does so with small noises that are amplified like the needle sliding over a damaged vinyl, producing a lurid texture.
Anla Courtis and Lehtisalo with ‘1972’ make an electrifying, yet overwhelming album, an ode to the electric guitar and its infinite effects; the detail work with the vocals and the use of space as a place full of sonic nuances.
