Daniel James Burke, afincado en Chicago, está activo desde 1983 como improvisador, compositor e intérprete. Trabaja en solitario con su propio nombre, bajo el seudónimo de Illusion Of Safety (como mejor se le conoce) y más recientemente como Twilight Furniture. Utiliza cuerdas, piano, técnicas extendidas, grabaciones de campo, sintetizador y dispositivos electrónicos.
Ha publicado más de 40 discos en sellos como Complacency, Die Stadt, Experimedia, Odd Size, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, and Waystyx. Ha colaborado componiendo, actuando en directo o en grabaciones con renombrados artistas como Jim O’Rourke, Darin Gray, Kevin Drumm, Jeb Bishop, Jon Mueller y Olivia Block, entre otros. Así también en los grupos Cheer-Accident, Tertium Quid (con Bill Horist y Dave Abramson) y Total Sound (con Chris Block).
En el ámbito de la improvisación Burke trabaja con el baterista Erik Sowa (+Jeb Bishop, Cory Bengtsen y/o Jeffrey Goulet) y graba y actúa centrado en el despliegue de los sintetizadores como Soundoferror.
Dan Burke se ha visto influenciado por la música clásica atonal, el ambient, el punk, rock progresivo, el minimalismo, la improvisación libre, la música industrial y el jazz. Con su alter-ego Illusion Of Safety ha navegado por todo el espectro de la música de vanguardia; los inicios del pop industrial, el arte sonoro, el minimalismo y la música electrónica.
“Just a Moment” -editado por Complacency Productions- es su nuevo disco que incluye cinco piezas con carácter ambiental y que abre con “Jupiter Candy”, el que comienza con una melancólica melodía de teclados y notas sintetizadas suspendidas por ecos. “Disquiet” contiene distintas capas aéreas sintetizadas repetitivas y arpegios que flotan en aire. Por momentos Burke juega con el pitch, junto a una suerte de breaks. “A Drift” muestra etéreas notas sintetizadas junto a un sonido similar al acordeón, lo que crea un espacio ceremonial, austero y profundo. En “A Moment in Seattle, A Moment In Elgin” se mezclan las grabaciones de campo que registra el despegue de un avión, mientras se desliza un piano con suavidad y elegancia. Para finalizar, “Life Goes On -Slightly Altered”, título que seguramente hace referencia a la situación actual en el mundo y por ello, la atmósfera inquietante que bordea esta canción con esos sinuosos y mántricos drones.
Daniel James Burke mantiene al escucha en un trance junto con ondas sonoras relajantes, pero al mismo tiempo expectante en un viaje siempre inquietante.

‘Just a Moment’ -released on Complacency Productions- is his new album, which includes five ambient pieces that opens with ‘Jupiter Candy’, which begins with a melancholic keyboard melody and synthesized notes suspended by echoes. ‘Disquiet’ contains different layers of repetitive synthesized air and arpeggios that float in the air. At times, Burke plays with the pitch, along with a kind of break. ‘A Drift’ features ethereal synth notes alongside an accordion-like sound, creating a ceremonial, austere and profound space. In ‘A Moment in Seattle, A Moment In Elgin,’ field recordings of an aeroplane taking off are mixed with a piano gliding smoothly and elegantly. Finally, ‘Life Goes On -Slightly Altered’, a title that surely refers to the current situation in the world and, therefore, the eerie atmosphere that surrounds this song with its sinuous and mantric drones.
Daniel James Burke keeps the listener in a trance along with soothing sound waves, but at the same time expectant on an ever-unsettling journey.
