Goldmund

Goldmund es un proyecto de Keith Keniff de Boston. Su propuesta minimalista de piano es tan simple como bella, con acercamientos a la música clásica y el folk. Sólo piano, un micrófono – que captura el sonido de los dedos presionando las teclas del piano – y a veces una guitarra. Atisbos a Satie, George Winston o Ryuichi Sakamoto son un referente natural.
Actualmente estudia música en la Universidad de Berkeley y toca la batería en grupos de jazz. Por otra parte, en la vena electrónica, posee el seudónimo de Helios que ha editado su álbum “Unomia” Merck Records [2004] y recientemente su larga duración “Coduroy Road” en Type Records. Además de algunas remezclas y compilados.

Goldmund is Boston based Keith Keniff’s project. His minimalist piano proposal is both simple as beautiful with hints to classical and folk music. Only a piano, a microphone – that captures the subtle sound of fingers pressing the keys of the piano and occasionally a guitar, creates an intense atmosphere, and spying to Satie, George Winston or Ryuichi Sakamoto are a natural referring.
Nowadays he studies music at the University of California, Berkeley and plays drums in several jazz bands.
On the other hand, in the electronic vein, he works under the Helium moniker that has recorded the album ‘Unomia’ for Merck Records and his full-length ‘Corduroy Road’ was released on Type Records. In addition some remixes and appearances in compilations.

**Realmente no me di cuenta que parte de la música en tu álbum “Coduroy Road” tiene raíces en la música folk de Guerra Civil Norteamericana. ¿De qué forma esta influencia es evidente en este álbum? ¿Es por las melodías?**
“Bueno, la canción ‘Marching through Georgia’ es tradicional de la Guerra Civil y un par de otras también, en particular ‘Larrows of the field’ fueron débilmente basadas en simples armonías corales que se utilizan en la música de la Guerra Civil y en los principios de la música folk americana. El disco es más bien basado en armonías que en melodías”.

**En tu música se puede apreciar el sonido de los dedos cuando presionan las teclas del piano o el abrir y cerrar del piano. ¿Este sonido es tan real lo que quisiste mantener aparte de lo que significa tocar un piano?**
“Básicamente puse los micrófonos muy al azar y toqué el piano. Sólo quería capturar lo que cualquiera pudiera escuchar si estuviera sentado al piano”.

**¿Al estudiar puede ser un buen antecedente para moverse en diferentes territorios musicales?**
“He estado tocando [la batería] profesionalmente el jazz cerca de ocho años y tocando la batería es como mejor me siento. Como compositor trato de hacer tantos diferentes estilos como sea posible, incluso como si fuera un ejercicio. Es importante aprender el vocabulario. Creo que incluso cuando alguien escribe en un particular estilo, se necesita exponerse y practicar, enfrentándose a situaciones que son algo ajenas o inconfortables. Creo que es esencial convertirse en un buen músico”.

**¿Podemos esperar un nuevo álbum de Goldmund?**
“De momento el más próximo sería el próximo año; desde hace tiempo he grabado bastante material de piano”.

**I really did not notice that part of the music of your album ‘Corduroy Road’ has its roots in the American Civil War folk music. In what form this influence is evident in the album? The melody lines?**
“Well, the song ‘Marching through Georgia’ is a traditional song from the civil war, and a couple of the others, in particular ‘Larrows of the field’ were loosely based on the kind of simple chordal harmony used in the music of the civil war and early American folk music. More based on harmony than melody.”

**In your music it can be appreciate the sound of your fingers pressing on the piano keys or the opening/closing the piano. This sound so real you wanted to keep as part of what it means to play a piano?**
“Basically I put the microphones up pretty haphazardly and played, I just wanted to capture whatever one would hear if you were sitting at the piano.”

**As you are studying music must be a good background to move into different musical territories?**
“I’ve been playing jazz [drums] professionally for about 8 years, as a performer that is what I’m most comfortable with. As a composer I try to write in as many different styles as I can, even only as an exercise, it’s important to learn the vocabulary. I think even if someone is writing in a particular style, they need to expose themselves to and practice putting themselves in situations that may be foreign or uncomfortable. It is, I believe, essential to becoming a better musician.”

**We can expect new albums of Goldmund?**
“Presently the earliest would be next year; I’ve recorded quite a bit of piano material since then.”
