Deru [aka Ben Wynn] de la ciudad de Los Ángeles es un músico que privilegia las texturas conformadas de estática y ruidos, una estética que le permite confrontar y al mismo tiempo fusionar con las armonías que despliega a través de los teclados. Esto es lo que promueve su segundo álbum “Trying To Remember” esta vez editado por el sello Merck.
El primero álbum “Pushing Air”, se editó en 2003 en el sello inglés Neo Ouija. Además ha hecho remezclas para Tiki Obmar y apariciones en compilados editados en Delikatessen y en el tercer volumen de la serie “Clicks & Cuts” de Mille Plateaux.

Deru [aka L.A.’s Ben Wynn] from Los Ángeles is a musician who privilege textures conformed of statics and noises, aesthetic that allow him to confront and at the same time to fuse with the harmonies that unfold through the keyboards lines. This is what he promotes this time with the release of his second album ‘Trying To Remember’ on the Merck label.
He’s first LP ‘Pushing Air’ was release in 2003 on London based Neo Ouija imprint. In addition he did a remix for Tiki Obmar and made some appearances in compilations released on Delikatessen and in the third volume of the series ‘Clicks & Cuts’ on Mille Plateaux.

**¿Puede ser difícil entender la ecuación entre el ruido y las melodías habiendo un ambient en el fondo. ¿Cómo podrías explicar esta simbiosis en tu música?**
“Definitivamente el ruido juega un rol importante en mi música. Siempre me ha gustado lo sucio y la estática. Esta fue de las primeras cosas que conocí del hip-hop. Hay tantos diferentes tipos de ruidos, tanto colores. Tenemos pocas palabras para describirlos. Tiendo a acentuar el ruido y sacarlo para fuera. El ruido y la textura a menudo forman la base de mis canciones, luego pongo las melodías en alguna parte dentro de todo eso”.

**¿Cuáles son los tipos de sonidos/ruidos te gusta grabar?**
“Si estoy sampleando me gusta agarrarlos para obtener raros eventos aleatorios sonoros. Puede ser la parte que está entremedio de dos sonidos, o puede ser que sea el final de una frase. Me gusta comenzar con fuentes complejas porque encuentro que de esta forma el resultado final es más satisfactorio”.

**Al parecer hay una historia detrás del álbum “Trying To Remember”, como puede notarse en los títulos de los temas [“I don’t know you”; “The reasons”; “Words you said”]. ¿Cuál es tu opinión?**
“El título del álbum fue porque en aquella época cuando yo estaba pensando mucho acerca de la memoria. Estaba fascinado acerca de cuan terrible soy con los nombres de las personas y las direcciones, pero para rapear canciones recuerdo palabras que he escuchado hace una década. He escuchado este tipo de cosas que guardo en distintas partes de mi cerebro. Los pacientes de Alzheimer no pueden recordar los nombres de sus hijos pero pueden cantar canciones de su juventud. Esta época también fue para mí un período de transición. Después de graduarme tuve un trabajo free-lance y tenía mucho tiempo libre. También mi abuela murió en ese tiempo, entonces algo de inspiración [para el álbum] es acerca de ella. Su voz está en el primer tema [“I don’t know you”]”.

**¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de los netlabels? Me da la impresión que todavía un sello tradicional – en la mayoría de los casos – mantiene y le preocupa la calidad, pero desafortunadamente hay muchos netlabels que son de dudosa calidad y por esa razón tienen un bajo perfil.**
“Me gustan los objetos. Nunca he sentido realmente que tengo la música a no ser que tenga una copia que sea mía. Entrega ésta una locación para poner mis sentimientos”.

**Pienso que el último tema “Only the circle” que pertenece al álbum arriba mencionado, muestra una faceta diferente de tu música. Aunque es ambient las atmósferas evocan un lugar distinto. Diría que el resto del álbum fue hecho dentro del marco de una ciudad, en tanto “Only…” está lejos de estar en una ciudad. ¿Estás de acuerdo?**
“Me gusta tu analogía. Entiendo lo que dices. Este es uno de esos temas que se construyen en sí mismos. Esto deviene siempre muy a menudo y usualmente son mis temas favoritos. Es una canción más introspectiva que las otras, pero pienso que se complementan. Lo nombré ‘Only the circle’ porque me gusta la idea de que todo se congregue. Las cosas se resuelven. Tiene que ver con esos momentos en que te sientes en paz, completamente, cuando tú sabes que todo va a estar bien, o cuando tú finalmente recuerdas”.

**It might be difficult to understand the equation between noise and melodies with an ambient in the background. How could you explain this symbiosis in your music?**
«Noise is definitely plays an important part in my music. I’ve always liked dirt and static. It’s one of the first things I noticed about HipHop. There are so many different kinds of noise, so many colors. We only have a few words for describing them. I tend to accent noise and bring it out. Noise and texture often form the basis for my songs, then I place the melodies somewhere within all that.»

**Which are the kind of sound/noises you like to record?**
«If I’m sampling I like grabbing sounds that have odd random sounding events in them. It could be the part in-between two sounds, or maybe the end of a phrase. I like to start with complex sources, I find the end result more satisfying that way.»

**It seems there is story behind your album ‘Trying To Remember’ as can be noted in the track titles [‘I don’t know you’; ‘The reasons’; ‘Words you said’]. What’s your opinion about this?**
«The title for the album was around a time when I was thinking a lot about memory. I’ve been fascinated about how terrible I am with peoples names and driving directions, yet I remember words to rap songs I haven’t heard in a decade. I’ve heard these types of things are stored in different places in the brain. Like Alzheimer’s patients who can’t remember the names of their children but can sing along to songs from their youth. This was also a transitional period for me. I was doing freelancing work after I graduated school and had a lot of free time. My grandmother died during this period as well, so some of the inspiration is about her. Her voice is on the first track.»

**What’s your opinion about the netlabels? I realized that still a traditional label – in most cases – keeps and cares about quality but unfortunately there are many netlabels which are of a dubious quality and for that reason netlabels have a low profile.**
«I like objects. I’ve never really felt like I’ve owned music unless I have a copy of it for my own. It gives a location to place your feelings.»

**I think that the last track ‘Only the circle’ that belongs to your album above mentioned, shows a different facet of your music. It’s still ambient though but the kind of atmosphere evokes a different place. I would say that the rest of the album was made within the city’s frame, while ‘Only…’ it’s far away from the city. Do you agree?**
«I like your analogy. I know what you mean. This is one of those tracks that built itself. These come along ever so often for me and they’re usually my favorite tracks. It’s a more introspective song compared to the others, but I think it compliments them. I named it ‘Only The Circle’ because I like the idea that everything comes around in the end. Things resolve. It’s about those times when you feel at peace, completed, when you know everything is going to be all-right, or when you finally remember.»
