The Plants
The Plants, que residen en Pórtland, Oregon, lo componen el cantante y guitarrista Joshua Blanchard y Molly Griffith en cello y piano. The Plants, based in Portland, Oregon, is comprised of Joshua Blanchard on voice and guitar and Molly Griffith on cello and piano. They create an intriguing psychedelic folk with a strong spiritual component based on their interest in folklore, nature, animals, plants, mythology, cults, religious rituals and the supernatural. This is reflected in their slow and obscure songs. Musically, they are influenced by modern ambient composers, ’60s acid folk and ancient musical texts.
Blanchard has been composing songs for a decade and has played with several bands, whereas Griffith is classically trained in medieval music and harpsichord and has also played in some Portland-based groups.
The Plants recently released the album ‘The Mind is a Bird in the Hand’ on Audio Dregs in which collaborated Michael Hendrickson [Jackie O Motherfucker], Brian Foote [Nudge] and Jason Buehler [Nice Nice].

Vuestra música tiene un sentimiento espiritual que produce un estado mental en paz. ¿Cuáles son los temas en los que están más interesados?
Molly: «Estamos interesados en los bosques, océanos, animales y plantas. Especialmente nos gusta Redwoods [parque nacional en California]. La cosa favorita que hacemos es salir al campo y olvidarnos de la ciudad, hacemos música y nos sentamos alrededor de un fuego toda la noche.»
Joshua: «Mi padre fue un pastor y, aunque me he alejado de estar organizando la religión en mi propia vida, tengo un profundo interés en la espiritualidad. Estoy especialmente intrigado por el folklore, mitología, cultos, rituales religiosos, falsos gurús y lo sobrenatural.»
Mi interpretación del título del álbum “The Mind is a Bird in the Hand” es que la mente puede volar a cualquier parte pero que hoy en día hay una falta de pájaros en nuestras mentes. ¿Cuál es tu opinión al respecto y qué textos antiguos ustedes recopilan?
Molly: «Cuando una persona es nerviosa sus manos tiemblan y se cierran. Contemplándome en mi mente como un pequeño pájaro en tu mano, ayuda a calmar la mano y así la mente. Realmente ninguno de nosotros colecciona música, no obstante, tenemos una gran cantidad de ésta. Particularmente a mí me gusta la música barroca francesa en clavicordio y a Joshua le gusta buscar música de los ’60 que nunca antes ha escuchado.»
¿Qué representa para ustedes el movimiento folk de los ’60?
Molly: «El movimiento psicodélico estaba creando algo ilimitado en sus pensamientos y esto se manifestó en todas las expresiones artísticas, particularmente la música. Fui suficientemente afortunada de conocer y conversar con Ken Kesey antes de que él muriera y su actitud de asombrarse siempre y entusiasmarse toda la vida es la mejor representación del movimiento psicodélico.»
¿Tienen proyectos paralelos?
Molly: «Joshua a veces escribe música con su antiguo compañero de la banda Point Line Plane, pero de otra forma, no. ¡Plants es muy demandante!»

Your music has a spiritual feeling and produces a peaceful state of mind. Which are the issues you are interested in?
Molly: «We are interested in forests, oceans, animals and plants. We especially like Redwoods. Our favorite thing to do is go out to the countryside and forget about the city, make music, and sit in front of a fire all night.»
Joshua: «My father was a minister, and although I have moved away from organized religion in my own life, I have a deep interest in spirituality. I am especially intrigued by folklore, mythology, cults, religious rituals, false gurus and the supernatural.»
My interpretation of the album’s title “The Mind is a Bird in the Hand” is that the mind can fly and go everywhere but nowadays there is a lack of birds in our minds. What’s your opinion and please tell us about the ancient musical texts you collect?
Molly: «When a person is nervous their hand shakes and clenches. Envisioning your mind as a small bird in your hand helps to calm the hand, and thus the mind. Neither of us really collects music, but we nonetheless have vast amounts of it. I particularly like French Baroque harpsichord music and Joshua likes finding music from the ’60s that he’s never heard before.»
What does the ’60s psychedelic movement represent to you?
Molly: «The psychedelic movement was about letting go of limitations in thought and this manifested itself in all art forms, particularly music. I was fortunate enough to meet and speak with Ken Kesey before he died, and his attitude of perpetual wonder and enthusiasm for all life is, to me, the best representation of the psychedelic movement.»
Do you have any side-projects?
Molly: «Joshua sometimes writes music with his old bandmate from Point Line Plane, but otherwise, no. Plants is all-consuming!»
