Yellow6
Jon Attwood aka Yellow6, residente en Leicester, Inglaterra, viene haciendo música desde principios de los ’80 cuando tocó en varias bandas punk. Luego, a mediados de los ’90, comenzó a experimentar con la guitarra, drones y loops, iniciando así su carrera en solitario en 1999. Desde entonces, ha producido varios singles, EP’s y ha participado en compilados en sellos como Atomic Recordings, Enraptured Records, Ochre, Make Mine Music, y recientemente en el sello inglés Resonant con su nuevo álbum “Painted Sky” [marzo, 2007].
La música de Attwood es ensoñadora y provoca sutiles atmósferas cargadas de guitarras cristalinas, líneas de teclado y piano.

Jon Attwood aka Yellow6, based in Leicester, UK, started making music in the early eighties playing in several punk bands. Later, in the mid ’90s, he began to experiment with guitar, drones and loops. In 1999, he launched his solo career, producing various singles, EPs and contributing to compilations on independent labels such as Atomic Recordings, Enraptured Records, Ochre, Make Mine Music, and more recently on the English label Resonant with his new album ‘Painted Sky’ [March, 2007].
Attwood’s music is dreamy and creates subtle atmospheres with swirling guitars and ambient keyboard and piano lines.

Yellow6 es tu proyecto en solitario y al parecer para componer la guitarra juega para ti un rol preponderante.
“La guitarra es el único instrumento que puedo tocar bien. He estado tocando en los últimos 20 años y la he utilizado en la mayoría de los sonidos en Yellow6. También uso beats que programo y algunas percusiones que toco en vivo, también piano, pero todo lo demás son guitarras”.
¿Hay algún aspecto de tu música que está sacado del punk de principios de los ’80?
“He notado recientemente que he estado volviendo a usar algo más de sonidos abrasivos con la guitarra, en lugar de sonidos livianos de los últimos años. Creo que esto se debe a que me he sentido más cómodo experimentando afuera de lo que se espera que haga con Yellow6, basándome en ediciones anteriores y también estoy consciente de no sonar como nada en particular.
Dado que estuve muchos años tocando en bandas con una formación ‘normal’ con batería, bajo, guitarra y voz, todavía tiendo a usar estructuras como canciones, aunque no tanto en la onda de verso, coros/verso, etc.”.
“Painted Sky” es un álbum basado en estructura de canciones. ¿De qué colores está pintado el cielo?
“[Creo que por lo que me dices estás preguntando por la intención de la onda del álbum]. Debo decir que no soy suficientemente listo para decidir qué tipo de estado anímico quisiera intentar crear con mi música. Al final todo termina sonando algo triste y solitario. Aunque esto puede sugerir que para mí los cielos son siempre grises y oscuros, a menudo son azules y claros.
Siempre me ha gustado la melodía en la música. Incluso cuando tocaba y escuchaba punk, mis bandas favoritas eran aquellas que utilizaban melodía además del ruido y la furia. Incluso con música instrumental, a pesar de que el sonido por sí solo puede ser bueno, prefiero que tenga alguna estructura y melodía”.
¿Tienes algunos proyectos paralelos?
“He estado trabajado últimamente en unos pocos proyectos: Northern Lakes – con Pascal Asselin [Below The Sea, Millimetrik] – batería por Pascal y guitarras por Yellow6. Con Dave Collingwood [Gravenhurst]. Estoy trabajando con Drone en guitarra, con Dirk Serries [Vidna Obmana/Fear Falls Burning]. Missed, un proyecto multifacético en el que yo envío loops y composiciones aún sin terminar de Yellow6 para otros artistas con el fin de hacerles ver lo que harían con sus ideas”.

Yellow6 is your solo Project. It seems that in order to compose the guitar plays an important role for you?
«Guitar is the only instrument I can play well. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and use it for most of the sounds in Yellow6. I also use beats that I program or some bits of percussion I have played live, and some piano sounds, but everything else is guitars.»
Is there any aspect in your music which is taken from the early 80’s punk when you played in different bands?
«I have noticed more recently I have been returning to using some more abrasive, distorted guitar sounds instead of the lighter sounds of the previous few years. I think this is as I am more comfortable with experimenting outside what is expected from Yellow6, based on previous releases, and I also am aware of not wanting to sound like anything in particular.
As I spent many years playing in bands with a ‘normal’ sort of line-up (drums, bass, guitar, vocals) I still tend to use song-like structures, although not so much in the vein of verse/chorus/verse etc.»
‘Painted Sky’ is a melodic song structured album. What colours is painted the sky of?
«[I think by this you are asking about the intended mood of the album?] I have to say that I am not clever enough to decide which sort of mood I will try and create with my music – it is just that most of it ends up being more sad and lonely sounding. Although this may suggest for me the skies are always dark and grey, they are more often blue and clear.
I have always loved melody in music. Even when I was playing and listening to punk, my favourite bands were those who used melody along with the noise and anger, and even with instrumental music, although sound for its own sake can be good, I prefer it to have some structure and melody.»
Do you hold any side-projects?
«I have been working lately on a few other projects: Northern Lakes – with Pascal Asselin (Below The Sea, Millimetrik) – drums by Pascal, guitars by Y6. Dave Collingwood (Gravenhurst) – work in progress. Drone guitar collaboration ongoing with Dirk Serries [Vidna Obmana/Fear Falls Burning]. Missed – a multi artist project where I sent loops of an unfinished Y6 composition for other artists to send their idea which I will form into something.»
