La Bandas’s

En 1996, en Santiago de Chile, un grupo de amigos motivados por la música y con ganas de experimentar se reúnen en el taller de Diego. Allí comienzan a improvisar produciendo un sonido psicodélico y grabando dichas sesiones en una grabadora de cuatro pistas.
A principios de 2000, La Banda’s quedó reducida a tres miembros: Diego, Salmón y JM. Realizaron por entonces su primera presentación pública en un festival independiente organizado por la galería itinerante Hoffmans’s House.
En 2006 se les une Álvaro, quien conoce al cuarteto The Cindy Sisters e invita a Vicente Siche (guitarra), Mauricio Dodss (teclados y bajo) y Pancho Cabala (guitarra) a tocar con La Banda’s, que hoy se compone de siete miembros. Pero hay un octavo miembro que ha sido el impulsor y gurú del grupo: Hugo Chávez, melómano fino y promotor del underground en Chile.
Este colectivo chileno de improvisación psicodélica acaba de editar su primer álbum homónimo en vinilo en el sello Pastabase, con sede en Santiago y Nueva York.
El álbum “La Banda’s” consiste en siete temas que combinan sicodelia, noise y folk. El sonido es sucio, propio del siseo de un casete y sacado tal cual salió de la grabadora.
Como nos comenta Diego en esta entrevista, La Banda’s tiene un sonido más orientado al rock, aunque persisten los viajes sicodélicos.

In 1996 in Santiago de Chile, a group of friends motivated by the music and with many interests for experimenting meet at Diego’s art workshop, where they started to improvise, producing a psychedelic sound and recording their jams in tons of cassettes using an old four-track tape recorder.
In the early 2000s, La Banda’s were reduced to Diego, Salmón and JM. They did their first concert at an independent festival hosted by Hoffmans’s House Art Gallery.
In 2006, Álvaro joined the group and invited Vicente Siche (guitar), Mauricio Dodss (keyboards & bass) and Pancho Cabala (guitar) of the psychedelic band The Cindy Sisters to play in La Banda’s, which nowadays consists of seven members. But it’s fair to say that there is an eighth member who has been the guru and impeller of the group: Hugo Chavez, a refined music lover and promoter of the Chilean underground.
This psychedelic and improvisational Chilean collective recently released their debut album on vinyl on the Pastabase label, based in Santiago and New York.
The ‘La Banda’s’ album combines folk, psychedelia and noise. The sound is dirty, with the hiss of a cassette, captured exactly as it came out of the tape recorder.
As Diego tells us in this interview, La Banda’s sound is focused on rock but the psychedelic trips still remain.

Editar el álbum «La Bandas’s» supongo que fue un gran paso para el grupo. ¿Qué es lo que viene ahora?
“Sí, básicamente fue nuestro único objetivo e inspiración por años, al principio casi en broma hasta que al fin se hizo realidad, lo que nos tiene muy contentos. Sobre todo porque nunca creímos que alguien quisiera editarnos, siendo un grupo bastante freak para el medio.
Lo que viene ahora supongo que es seguir entrenando, aprendiendo, grabando cintas, tocando en vivo de vez en cuando y sobre todo tratar de divertirnos en el camino”.

En el álbum «La Bandas’s» hay mucha improvisación que no fue grabada en forma premeditada. ¿Actualmente siguen grabando sus sesiones de improvisación para que quizás un próximo álbum?
“Tenemos bastante material, sobre todo del año pasado, de donde podría salir un futuro álbum en que el sonido creo estaría más enfocado al rock, porque eso fue lo que más hicimos en ese período. Ahora, como las cintas se siguen acumulando, no estamos seguros de qué contendría exactamente un hipotético futuro LP. En todo caso, aparecimos en el compilado Jacobino Discos ‘V.2’ y pronto aparece un split en Perú junto con el proyecto Acid Call y dos bandas peruanas, en una edición a cargo del músico limeño Wilder Gonzales”.

Muchos de los temas en el álbum son muy diferentes entre sí. Esto me dice que el grupo tiene una variada paleta de sonidos y muchas influencias musicales. ¿Qué opinan de esto?
“Bueno, las influencias son muchas porque rotan muchos integrantes y cada uno aporta lo suyo. Ahora el disco contiene registros de diferentes sesiones en donde los factores que influyen son muchos también y pueden ir más allá de lo meramente musical, esto es, la calidad del sonido, la cantidad de integrantes, los instrumentos o elementos que estos eligieron, o por ejemplo, el estado de embriaguez que alguno pueda llegar a experimentar. Además, como casi ninguno de nosotros tiene un manejo teórico o técnico muy elevado, sería difícil mostrar esas influencias directamente”.

Si tuvieran que escoger un tema para ser remezclado, ¿qué grupo te gustaría que lo hiciera?
“Bueno, el track más remixeable sería, creo, el que abre el disco, que de hecho es el único en el que utilizamos pistas separadas y mezcladas. Ahora, si me preguntas un nombre no sabría decirte quién, aunque dudo que quisiera remezclarnos”.

Releasing «La Bandas’s» album I guess it was a big step for the group. What’s coming next?
“Yes. Our main inspiration for years was to have our own record. At the beginning, was something like ‘what if…’ and the whole thing to get a record deal was our permanent joke within the band for a long time. Over time, this pursue became more and more serious to the point that we found ourselves actually working for that record. We are pretty happy with the results, especially when we thought that finding a local record label who’d be interested in us was near impossible. We were quite freaky for the Chilean context.
Looking ahead, my guess is La Bandas’s will continue making occasional shows, recording tapes out from our sessions and trying to get all the fun we can get from it.”

On «La Bandas’s» album there is a lot of improvisation which was recorded by chance. Nowadays are you still recording your jam sessions for a possible album maybe?
“We have a lot of tapes recorded during our improvisational sessions and most of them were made during the past year. Our next album project could start from it. Nowadays, the tapes reflect that La Bandas’s sound is more rock-oriented than in the past though we aren’t sure about the musical direction of the albums to come. Anyway, some recent examples of the current sound of La Bandas’s can be found in the new compilation (V2) of Jacobino Discos and in the forthcoming split with Acid Call and two other Peruvian bands to be released in Peru by Lima’s musician Wilder Gonzales.”

Many of the tracks in your album are very different from each other. This says to me that the group has a wide palette of sounds and many musical influences. Please let me know your opinion about this.
“Well, we have a huge amount of influences, at least as many as the ever-changing members of the group. All of them have contributed somehow to La Bandas’s sound. Moreover, there are other factors – like the sound quality, the instruments choice, the number of players involved and how drunk they came to a specific session – which has a great impact on the result of our sessions. None of us have a strong technical or theoretical musical background, anyway.”

Which track – if you have to choose only one – you would like to be remixed and with what group/artist?
“I think the first track of the record would be the one most suitable for remixing since no other has separated and mixed layers. Yet if you ask me who’d remix us, I have no answer, although I’d be surprised if someone could be interested in that task!”
