The Fun Years
The Fun Years se formó en 2005 por Isaac Sparks (tornamesas) y Ben Recht (guitarra).
Desde entonces han editado cinco CD-R’s. Barge Recordings editó su primer álbum “Life-Sized Psychoses” en 2007 y ese mismo año incluyó un tema del dúo en el compilado ‘Innature’.
Recientemente se publicó su segundo álbum “Baby, It’s Cold Inside” que es una mezcla de gruesas capas consistentes en sucios ruidos de siseos, pedazos de sonido tomados de discos viejos y baratos, guitarras apacibles, procesamiento análogo y drones.
Las inquietantes atmósferas producen una experiencia cinemática y tonos vacilantes.

The Fun Years founded in 2005 by members Isaac Sparks on turntables and Ben Recht on guitar.
Their discography consists in five CD-R’s. Barge Recordings released their first album ‘Life Sized Psychoses’ in 2007 and in the same year make an appearance on ‘Innature’ compilation of the label.
Recently Barge published the second album of the duo ‘Baby, It’s Cold Inside’ which is a blend of thick layers of textures consisting in vinyl surface noises, bits of sound taken from old and cheap records, gentle guitars, analogue processing and drones.
The disquieting atmosphere produces a cinematic experience and flickering tones.

Coméntanos si hay alguna relación entre el título del álbum y la música.
“Nuetros títulos son siempre bastante aleatorios. Normalmente utilizamos cualquier palabra que suene ridícula cuando necesitamos titular un tema. Por lo que no, usualmente no hay ninguna relación entre los títulos y la música, pero el oyente puede hacer cualquier conexión que él o ella quiera”.
El ruido de la superficie del vinilo es una suerte de áspero sonido y al mismo tiempo tan real, como un viejo objeto, con alguna historia detrás, no es evidente por lo que tienes que mirar, a fin de saber lo que está pasando. Lo que estoy tratando de preguntarte es si estos sonidos ásperos y sucios tienen un significado especial en vuestra música.
«Nos gustan los discos oscuros. Sin embargo, como ninguno de nosotros desea gastar más dinero en discos, tendemos a seleccionar al azar aquellos de tiendas económicas o del mercado de las pulgas. Cuando estás buscando los más baratos, es muy probable que sus anteriores dueños no los cuidaran bien y terminamos con sonidos de vinilo algo sucios”.
¿Hay algún criterio especial en la selección de los vinilos que ustedes usan para hacer “Baby, It’s Cold Inside”?
“Básicamente usamos los que podemos conseguir. Todavía estamos entusiasmados porque podemos encontrar en tiendas baratas. Mientras encontremos viejos y sorprendentes vinilos, tendremos bastante material para trabajar.
Simplemente intentamos encontrar una buena cantidad de discos por la menor cantidad de dinero posible. Con cualquier tipo de disco uno conoce sellos y artistas, pero Isaac (Sparks) le gusta pensar que cada disco que encontramos puede potencialmente tener algo útil para ocupar, aunque sea solo pedazos de sonidos entre éstos”.
¿Tienen proyectos paralelos?
“Ben (Recht) toca en una banda de art metal que se llama ‘Assault Lick’. Él también ha sacado discos en el pasado bajo el nombre de ‘Local Fields’. Isaac toca en el grupo VCRcore ‘The Maybe Pile’”.

Please let us know if there is a relation between album’s title and the music.
“Our naming schemes are always pretty random. We usually go with whatever word packages sound ridiculous at the time that we need to name the track. So, no, there’s usually never any relationship between the titles and the music. But the listener can make whatever connections he or she might like.”
The vinyl surface noise is a kind of rough sound and at the same time so real, like an old object with some story behind, it’s not so evident so you have to look forward in order to know what’s happening. What I’m trying to ask you is if these rough and «dirty» sounds have an special meaning in your music.
“We like obscure records as much as the next guy. However, since neither of us is willing to spend money on records anymore, we tend to just pull random selections from thrift stores and flea markets. When you’re looking for the cheapest records, it’s very likely that their previous owner(s) didn’t take very good care of them, and we end up with some pretty dirty sounding vinyl.”
There is a special criteria in the selection of the vinyls you used for the making of «Baby, It’s Cold Inside»?
“Basically, we take what we can get. We’re still amazed that we can find records in thrift stores. As long as we can find beat up and old vinyl, we’ll have plenty of material to work with.
We just try to find the largest quantity of records for the smallest amount of cash. Like with any type of record digging, you get to know labels and artists, but Isaac likes to think that any record we find could potentially have something useful in it, even if it’s just in the bits of sound between sounds.”
Do you any side-projects?
“Ben Moonlights in a sludgy art metal band called ‘Assault Lick.’ He has also released stuff in the past under the name «Local Fields.» Isaac plays in the VCRcore band ‘The Maybe Pile.’”
